In early March, 2002 the US Senate is expected to decide whether the oil industry will be free to destroy the biological heart of America's Arctic coastal plain for a speculative six-month supply of oil. At no time in the past half-century has there been a more clear-cut environmental vote; its outcome will resonate into our country's future. If the oil industry prevails and drills in the Refuge, it would irreparably damage one of the wildest remaining places in North America. Americans for Alaska Take Action to Protect the Arctic
On Thursday, February 7, 2002 Americans for Alaska co-sponsored a press conference with Senator Susan Collins of Maine that called for a rejection of plans to drill in the Arctic Wildlife Refuge. Joining Senator Collins were Senators Lincoln Chafee of Rhode Island and Olympia Snowe of Maine (Senator Snowe could not attend but sent a statement). On hand for the event for Americans for Alaska were Ted Roosevelt IV, Susan Eisenhower and Larry Rockefeller. On Thursday, February 7, 2002 Americans for Alaska delivered an open letter to the US Senate signed by nearly 200 prominent Americans from every walk of life and every corner of the country.
March 5, 2002 Americans for Alaska will publish a full page ad in the Washington Times saluting five Senators who are exhibiting extradordinary leadership on the fight to protect the Arctic. This ad will be available for viewing on March 5. |
